The Oscar-winning actress Lupita Nyong’o, known for her role in Steve McQueen’s “12 Years a Slave”, has been appointed as the Jury President at the 2024 Berlin Film Festival.

Nyong’o will head the competition jury bringing her immense talent and global perspective to a prestigious role.

After the announcement was made, the actress expressed her happiness, said, “I am deeply honored to serve as the President of the International Jury of the Berlin International Film Festival. I look forward to celebrating and recognizing the outstanding work of filmmakers from around the world”.

The Mexican-Kenyan actor won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role in “12 Years a Slave”, since then she has risen to unparalleled heights in the international film arena.
Born in Mexico City, this versatile actor, director, producer, and bestselling author has captured hearts and accolades worldwide.

Nyong’o began with studies in Film and Theatre at Hampshire College in the USA, followed by a stint at the Yale School of Drama. Her breakthrough role in “12 Years a Slave” not only earned her an Oscar but also garnered critical acclaim with accolades like the Screen Actors Guild Award, Critics’ Choice Award, Independent Spirit Award, and the NAACP Image Award.

The actress has worked in many famous films including Marvel blockbuster “Black Panther”, its sequel “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever”, “Us”, “Little Monsters”, “Queen of Katwe”, “Star Wars: The Force Awakens”, and a horror film “The 355”.

Her upcoming ventures include a role in the “A Quiet Place: Day One” horror series.
Nyong’o’s work extends beyond acting. She has showcased her talents on Broadway stage, and authored a children’s book called “Sulwe” (2020). She is currently crafting a podcast spotlighting non-fictional storytelling from the African diaspora and also developing a series based on Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s “Americanah”.

Recently, she did a Sudanese film “Goodbye Julia” as an executive producer, which was the directorial debut of Mohamed Kordofani.

The film was Sudan’s contender for Best International Feature Film at the 96th Academy Awards.
