John Boyega is all set to play the lead role and executive produce ‘The Book of Eli’ TV series prequel to the 2010 post-apocalyptic action film, reported Deadline. The original movie featured Denzel Washington in the title role, and Boyega will portray a younger version of Eli in this new project. The series is created, written, and executive produced by Gary Whitta, the writer of the film, along with the Hughes brothers, who directed the movie and also serve as executive producers. Alcon Entertainment, the studio behind the film, is producing the TV project, which is currently being presented to select premium buyers. Set in a post-apocalyptic America, ‘The Book of Eli’, a neo-Western film, unfolds 30 years after a nuclear catastrophe triggers an ecocide. The story follows Eli, portrayed by Denzel Washington, a nomad navigating a desolate landscape. Eli’s journey involves fierce battles as he safeguards a sacred book containing the secrets essential for humanity’s salvation. After the conclusion of the Hollywood strikes, this project marks one of the most prominent, star-studded, intellectual property (IP)-centered packages to enter the premium TV market. The TV prequel does not include the 2010 Book of Eli, distributed by Warner Bros which was a box office success with $157.1 million collection worldwide on an $80 million budget.
