Building on the success of last year’s Evil Dead Rise, franchise creators Sam Raimi and Robert Tapert are now collaborating with director Sébastien Vaniček for co-writing and directing a new spin-off movie. Vaniček was named for the project after signing with Creative Artists Agency (CAA) and the project is to be made under Ghost House Pictures.
Evil Dead Rise, directed by writer-director Lee Cronin, made more than $147M worldwide last year. It was released in theatres under Warner Bros, after world premiering at SXSW.
According to Deadline report, plot details for the upcoming film remain tightly under wraps. The Evil Dead franchise, created by Raimi, traces its roots back to the 1981 film of the same name, starring Bruce Campbell as Ash Williams, a fighter against various supernatural forces. This original film spawned a trilogy and led to the development of the Starz TV series Ash vs Evil Dead.
Vaniček gained recognition for his work in the short film domain, particularly with his French horror Vermin (also known as Infested). The film, which premiered in the Critics’ Week sidebar at the Venice Film Festival, depicts an apartment building overrun by deadly spiders. It received acclaim, winning Best Picture and Best Director at its North American premiere at Fantastic Fest, and also earning a nomination for Best Motion Picture at the Sitges Film Festival, where it secured a Special Jury Prize.
While Vermin has predominantly been showcased at festivals, it’s poised for wider distribution beyond France, especially with Vaniček’s involvement in this new endeavor, which is likely to bolster its prospects.
Besides Vermin, Vaniček’s work includes Crocs, Mayday, and 299 792 458 M/S. He remains under the representation of Carla Zeller and Elsa Huisman at Studio 112, a prominent French management company known for its roster of top European talent.
