Iowa Hawkeyes guard Caitlin Clark was named the winner of the Naismith Women’s College Player of the Year Award for a second consecutive season after a historic NCAA season.
Clark topped Division I in scoring, averaging 32.0 points per game, and led in assists with 9.0 per contest. In March, she achieved the milestone of becoming the all-time leading scorer in NCAA Division I basketball history, surpassing the legendary “Pistol” Pete Maravich.
This year, she also established a new record for the highest number of points scored in a single women’s NCAA Division I basketball season.
“I think it’s been a special year for women’s basketball, so to win this award is really special,” Clark said Wednesday.
Since Connecticut’s Breanna Stewart, Clark is the first women’s player to win the award successively. Stewart won the award three times in a row, 2014-2015-2016.
At just 22 years old, Clark has steered the Hawkeyes to the Final Four of the women’s NCAA Tournament for the second year in a row. Moreover, she is poised to be the top pick in the WNBA draft in just 12 days.
Iowa beat the LSU Tigers 94-87 on Monday in a rematch of last year’s national championship game.
Clark scored 41 points – including going 9-of-20 from three-point range – to go with 12 assists and seven rebounds.
