Following the success of the “Dune” prequel series “Dune: Prophecy” on Max, Legendary Entertainment is turning its attention to another blockbuster franchise, “Pacific Rim.” The indie studio is developing an origin story for the “Pacific Rim” film universe, with Eric Heisserer, known for his work on “Shadow and Bone” and “Bird Box,” at the helm. This new project is part of a first-look deal that Heisserer and his production company, Chronology, co-founded with Carmen Lewis, have signed with Legendary.
“Eric is a multitalented, prolific creator whose track record of critical and commercial successes speaks for itself,” said Jason Clodfelter, President of Legendary Television. “We are thrilled to launch our partnership with Eric, Chronology, and Carmen, with a new entry in the epic, globally popular Pacific Rim universe.”
Set in a world where humanity battles monstrous invaders by creating equally formidable mechanized warriors known as Jaegers, the “Pacific Rim” universe has captivated audiences since its debut in 2013. The original film, directed by Guillermo del Toro, introduced the concept of humanity’s fight for survival against the colossal Kaiju, trans-dimensional creatures threatening global annihilation. The franchise has since expanded into various media, including the Netflix animated series “Pacific Rim: Black.”
Heisserer, who most recently served as showrunner, executive producer, and writer for Netflix’s “Shadow and Bone,” brings a wealth of experience to the project. His previous work includes writing the hit Sandra Bullock film “Bird Box” and the critically acclaimed sci-fi thriller “Arrival,” directed by Denis Villeneuve, which earned him an Oscar nomination and a Writers Guild of America (WGA) Award.
The deal between Heisserer and Legendary marks the beginning of what is expected to be a fruitful collaboration on a range of intellectual property and related projects. As the “Pacific Rim” universe continues to expand, fans can look forward to new stories that delve deeper into the origins of the epic battles between humanity and the Kaiju.
