British actor Jamie Thomas King is all set to produce James Titcombe’s memoir Joshua’s Story: Uncovering the Morecambe Bay Maternity Scandal for a film adaptation. The movie, titled Trust, will be produced under King’s newly launched Blackbird Productions banner, which he co-founded with his wife, Canadian actress Tamara Podemski.
King is currently penning the screenplay for Trust, which delves into the devastating medical negligence that led to the death of Titcombe’s son, Joshua, at just nine days old. Joshua’s passing, caused by an infection missed by hospital staff at Morecambe Bay Hospital in the UK, led to the Morecambe Bay Investigation, which uncovered systemic failings that contributed to the unnecessary deaths of 11 babies and one mother.
“Right now, I do not have intention to act in or direct the project. But yes, I became interested in the subject following Benjamin’s death and subsequent lawsuit,” King told The Hollywood Reporter.
King’s personal connection to the material stems from his own tragedy. In 2016, he and Podemski lost their second son, Benjamin, to medical negligence. Benjamin died five days after a delayed emergency caesarean section at Royal United Hospital in Bath, Somerset. Podemski had been 14 days overdue when the procedure was postponed.
Titcombe’s memoir, published in 2015, brings attention to the grave consequences of medical negligence. King’s Trust will seek to honor this legacy, though he has no plans to take on an acting or directorial role in the project.
King and Podemski’s Blackbird Productions is making waves with several new projects in development. The production company’s first feature, The Light Before The Sun, directed by Michael Greyeyes, is set to premiere at the Hamilton Film Festival.
