The iconic Ghostface killer will be back on the big screen, as Scream 7 is set to hit theaters on 27th February, 2026, following a turbulent production period filled with delays, cast changes, and creative shifts. The release date was confirmed by Neve Campbell, who is making her return to the series after skipping Scream VI due to a salary dispute, alongside the franchise’s creator, Kevin Williamson, who will also direct the latest installment.
The seventh film in the beloved horror franchise stands alone on its release weekend, with no major competitors. The family-friendly films The Cat in the Hat and Disney-Pixar’s Hoppers are scheduled for the following weekend.
Behind-the-scenes drama has surrounded Scream 7 ever since the project was announced. Melissa Barrera, star of the previous two films, was removed from the sequel after her social media comments about the Israel-Hamas war sparked controversy. Co-star Jenna Ortega also exited due to scheduling conflicts with her hit Netflix series Wednesday. Additionally, original director Christopher Landon departed the project in December 2023, citing it as “a dream job that turned into a nightmare.” Williamson has since taken over directing duties.
Production faced further setbacks due to the SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes, but with Paramount Pictures distributing and Spyglass Media producing, the film is back on track. Scream 7 will be written by Guy Busick, a key writer of the franchise’s recent reboots, while James Vanderbilt, William Sherak, and Paul Neinstein are producing through Project X Entertainment, with Radio Silence serving as executive producers.
