The BBC and Magic Light Pictures have released a sneak peek of their upcoming Christmas animation Tiddler, set to air on BBC iPlayer and BBC One this festive season. Adapted from Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler’s beloved picture book, Tiddler tells the story of a little fish with a big imagination who gets lost in the ocean, only to be saved by the power of his storytelling.
Hannah Waddingham, best known for her roles in Ted Lasso and Game of Thrones, leads the voice cast as the narrator. Sharing her enthusiasm for the project, Waddingham said, “The books and films of Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler have been, without a doubt, the greatest cornerstone of my daughter’s and my life together. They are the most beautiful marriage of animation and voice, perfectly cast. There’s always something that leans towards the main character not realising just how special they are, and it’s a joyous thing to teach a child from an early age that you are delicious, just the way you are.”
The half-hour animated special boasts an impressive ensemble of voice talent. Lolly Adefope (Ghosts), Jayde Adams (Alma’s Not Normal), and Rob Brydon (Gavin and Stacey)—who returns for his twelfth Donaldson and Scheffler adaptation—will lend their voices to a range of characters, alongside young actors Reuben Kirby as Tiddler and Theo Fraser as Johnny Dory.
Directed by Andy Martin and Alex Bain, Tiddler continues the BBC’s annual tradition of adapting Donaldson and Scheffler’s works, following last year’s hit Tabby McTat, which attracted 8.6 million viewers. Magic Light Pictures’ Barney Goodland and Martin Pope serve as producers, with the film acquired by BBC’s Chief Content Officer Charlotte Moore and Drama Commissioning Editor Nawfal Faizullah.
