The 2025 European Film Market (EFM) is set to open from 13-19 February under the leadership of Tanja Meissner, bringing together a global community of industry professionals including producers, distributors, sales agents, and investors. As one of the world’s most influential platforms for film licensing and networking, the EFM promises to be a hotbed of trends and innovations that will shape the future of global film and TV production. With exhibition spaces already fully booked, this year’s event is poised to showcase the vibrant pulse of the international film industry.
One of the major highlights of the 2025 EFM will be the inaugural presentation of the EFM Distributor Award on 12 February. This award aims to honor European Arthouse distributors for their contribution to cultural diversity, with a 7,500-euro cash prize sponsored by Fintage House. The three-member jury of industry leaders will emphasize the crucial role these distributors play in the global film market.
In a bid to explore the cutting-edge technologies revolutionizing the film industry, the newly introduced Innovation Hub will take center stage at the Gropius Bau. This exciting new area will showcase AI-based solutions, interactive panels, and hands-on workshops, offering market badge holders exclusive access to a dynamic array of emerging technologies. The initiative, realized in collaboration with industry giants like Microsoft, Vimeo, and select start-ups, underscores the growing significance of tech in modern filmmaking. “The main focus lies on providing EFM participants with a highly efficient infrastructure and on creating opportunities for business and networking,” says Tanja Meissner. “We aim to facilitate a stronger market and promote diversity, emerging talent, and knowledge sharing.”
Berlinale Pro*-Director Tricia Tuttle expressed her enthusiasm for the upcoming developments, stating, “A strong Berlinale means getting the market and the audience festival to work more closely in tandem.” This year, the EFM will also see new screening locations, including the University of Applied Sciences, and a renewed partnership with venues like CinemaxX and the Documentation Centre for Displacement, Expulsion, and Reconciliation.
The DocSalon will once again be a hub for documentary filmmakers, featuring a diverse program focused on key issues in production and distribution. New additions include the “Breakfast Club” and the “Happy Innovation Hour” aimed at fostering networking opportunities. At the Berlinale Series Market, now in its eleventh year, a series of high-potential international productions will be on display, accompanied by a comprehensive conference program.
As part of its commitment to diversity, the EFM will spotlight Spain as its “Country in Focus” for 2025, celebrating the country’s dynamic role in film production, its tech-forward approach, and creative excellence. Additionally, the EFM Toolbox programme, which focuses on integrating marginalized groups into the industry, will continue its work, supported by funding from Creative Europe Media and the Canada Media Fund.
For the second consecutive year, AfroBerlin, organized by Yanibes, will return with a broadened focus, including the Afro Music Film Day and the African Pavilion in the Marriott Hotel. These events will further establish Berlin as a central meeting point for Africa’s growing presence in the global film scene.
The 2025 EFM is shaping up to be a transformative event, uniting the best in innovation, talent, and industry expertise. With these new additions, it promises to foster a stronger, more inclusive future for the global film industry.
