The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) has released the longlist of films and talent advancing to the next round of voting for the 2025 EE BAFTA Film Awards. This marks the beginning of the crucial second phase, as voters decide which contenders will secure nominations. The results will be revealed on 15 January at a globally streamed event hosted by 2024 EE Rising Star Mia-McKenna Bruce and BAFTA-winner Will Sharpe. David Tennant is set to take center stage as the host of the prestigious ceremony on 16 February, at London’s Southbank Centre’s Royal Festival Hall. The awards will be broadcast on BBC One, iPlayer, and internationally via BritBox and other broadcasters. The longlists span across 25 categories, from Best Film and Director to a newly introduced Children’s & Family Film category, reflecting a diverse range of talent and storytelling. This new category underscores BAFTA’s commitment to celebrating films that resonate with inter-generational audiences. Anna Higgs, Chair of the BAFTA Film Committee, praised the achievements of the 80 longlisted films, chosen from a pool of 235 contenders. “It’s been an exceptional year for filmmaking featuring bold creative voices and inspiring stories,” she said. Higgs also highlighted the impact of awards season on cinema-going, fostering excitement and engagement among film fans. The longlisting round, introduced in 2021, ensures fair consideration for all films, regardless of marketing budgets. BAFTA members are provided with a curated selection of films, both in-person and through BAFTA View, the academy’s online platform. Voting for the second round runs until 10 January, with compulsory viewing of all longlisted films for voters. Specialist chapters and diverse juries, representing a range of industry roles, backgrounds, and experiences, will deliberate on categories such as Children’s & Family Film and Outstanding Debut. As the public gears up for the EE Rising Star Award, celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2025, excitement builds for this fan-favorite category, with nominees set to be announced on 7 January.
