The Oscar-winning actor Cillian Murphy is deeply involved in the upcoming “28 Years Later” as an executive producer, but won’t be reprising his iconic role as Jim.

Producer Andrew Macdonald recently shed light on Murphy’s involvement. Speaking to Empire, Macdonald said, “[On] this, we wanted him to be involved and he wanted to be involved. He is not in the first film, but I’m hoping there will be some Jim somewhere along the line.” He added, “He’s involved at the moment as an executive producer, and I would hope we can work with him in some way in the future in the trilogy.”

The film, set to premiere on 20 June, reunites original director Danny Boyle and writer Alex Garland. Following this installment, fans can look forward to the Nia DaCosta-directed “28 Years Later: The Bone Temple,” premiering on 16 January, 2026.

Speculation erupted after the teaser for “28 Years Later” featured a zombie that some fans believed was Murphy in disguise. However, it was art dealer Angus Neill who portrayed the character. Boyle admitted he was initially dismissive of the confusion. “I showed my girlfriend the trailer and she said, ‘People will think that’s Cillian,’” Boyle recounted. “I said, ‘Don’t be silly.’ I ignored her. So I’ve eaten a bit of humble pie since.”

Murphy, who captivated audiences as Jim in 2002’s “28 Days Later,” was also absent from the 2007 sequel “28 Weeks Later.” Despite his non-appearance in the new film, his influence remains significant as he steps into his role as executive producer.
