Bestselling author Juno Dawson is stepping into the Whoniverse as one of the new writers for the upcoming season of Doctor Who. Dawson, known for her acclaimed books such as This Book is Gay and Her Majesty’s Royal Coven, is among several fresh faces joining Russell T Davies’ revamped series, alongside Pete McTighe, Inua Ellams, and Sharma Angel-Walfall.
Dawson, a long-time fan of the iconic sci-fi series, has already made her mark in the Doctor Who universe with the BBC spin-off podcast Doctor Who: Redacted, which features former Doctor Jodie Whittaker. The podcast follows a group entangled in a supernatural conspiracy where everyone who has ever met the Doctor begins disappearing. Reflecting on her lifelong connection to the show, Dawson said, “I started watching Doctor Who with my grandma when I was ten-years-old in the 1990s. From writing fan-fiction for an audience of one, to scripting the best TV show of all time is truly a dream come true. I can’t wait for fans and newcomers to see the new season.”
Dawson is not the only creative force joining the new era of Doctor Who. McTighe, known for A Discovery of Witches and The Pact, is also contributing his talents and serves as a writer and executive producer for The War Between The Land And The Sea, a major spin-off featuring Gugu Mbatha-Raw and Russell Tovey. Angel-Walfall brings her experience from projects like Supacell and The Ballad of Renegade Nell, while Ellams, celebrated for his poetry and plays, adds another layer of creative depth to the series.
The second season of Doctor Who under Davies’ revived leadership will debut later this year, continuing the journey of Ncuti Gatwa as the Doctor. Last year marked a groundbreaking moment for the series as Gatwa took on the lead role, and Doctor Who entered a co-production agreement with Disney+. The new season will be produced by Bad Wolf and BBC Studios for the BBC and Disney Branded Television. It will air on BBC One and BBC iPlayer in the UK and stream exclusively on Disney+ in other regions.
Davies is at the helm as showrunner and executive producer, alongside Joel Collins, Phil Collinson, Julie Gardner, and Jane Tranter.
