Banijay Entertainment’s high-energy adventure reality format Shaolin Heroes is making its way beyond Denmark, securing its first international adaptations in Belgium and the Netherlands, according to Deadline exclusive. The format, originally created by Banijay’s Danish label Metronome for TV2, has been picked up by VTM in Belgium and RTL Nederlands, which has tapped Banijay-owned SimpelZodiak to produce the Dutch version.

The show follows celebrities as they push their physical and mental limits to master the ancient art of Shaolin martial arts. Under the mentorship of two Shaolin masters, participants undergo grueling challenges designed to test endurance, discipline, and resilience. The format proved a hit in Denmark, where its debut season outperformed the prime-time slot average by 31%. With a second season set to launch soon, Banijay is capitalizing on the show’s momentum by bringing it to new markets.

“Metronome’s Shaolin Heroes is an adventure reality format unlike any other, taking the audience on an immersive and transformational journey,” said Isabelle Dams, Managing Director at Banijay Belgium. “Bringing this unique format to Belgium with VTM is an exciting step, and we know viewers will be enticed by its intensity,” added Dams.

Justine Huffmeijer, Managing Director at SimpelZodiak, shared similar enthusiasm for the Dutch adaptation, said, “Shaolin Heroes is a bold and unique format which respectfully highlights the Shaolin tradition. Enjoying a solid performance in Denmark, we are eager to launch the Dutch version and watch these celebrities embark on this challenging, yet rewarding experience.”

The format, which was featured as a Deadline Hot One for MIPCOM in October, has been praised for its compelling storytelling and striking visuals. Banijay’s Chief Creative Officer, Development, James Townley, noted that Shaolin Heroes had “all the makings of a traveling success” thanks to “responsible story-making at its heart, relatable celebrities and authentic representation of the Shaolin community, paired with stunning visual effects and the production know-how of our teams.”

Tina Christensen, Managing Director at Metronome, emphasized the show’s potential to engage global audiences. “This premium adventure reality series is a testament to the creativity and ambition of the Metronome team, blending stunning scenery and human endurance,” she said. “Shaolin Heroes has all the key elements to captivate global audiences, and it’s exciting to see this original format expanding its international footprint, while returning here in Denmark for another thrilling season”

Banijay’s expansion of Shaolin Heroes comes ahead of its London TV Screenings event later this month, further signaling the company’s global ambitions for the format.
