Conclave claimed the top prize of Best Film award at the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA), leading the evening with four wins, tying with The Brutalist for the most awards.

Edward Berger’s Vatican-set thriller entered the night with 11 nominations and secured victories in key categories. Meanwhile, Brady Corbet’s The Brutalist also took home four BAFTAs, including Best Director for Corbet and Leading Actor for Adrien Brody, a recognition for his performance in the 3.5-hour epic.

One of the night’s biggest surprises came in the Leading Actress category, where Mikey Madison (Anora) emerged victorious, defying expectations that favored The Substance’s Demi Moore. Sean Baker’s sex worker comedy Anora picked up two awards in total, while Coralie Fargeat’s body-horror The Substance had to settle for a win in Makeup and Hairstyling.

The BAFTA jury also shared recognition among a diverse set of films, with Emilia Pérez, Wicked, A Real Pain, Dune: Part Two, and Wallace and Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl each securing two wins. However, one of the night’s biggest surprises was the complete shutout of James Mangold’s A Complete Unknown, the Bob Dylan biopic, which failed to convert any of its six nominations into a win.

Unlike previous years, the ceremony was relatively free of controversy. Host David Tennant was one of the few to inject political humor, mentioning U.S. President Donald Trump three times in his monologue, quipping, “It’s like Beetlejuice — I’ve summoned him.” However, much of this was cut from the BBC’s broadcast.

One moment that could have sparked debate was Jacques Audiard’s acceptance speech for Emilia Pérez in the Film Not in the English Language category, in which he thanked lead actress Karla Sofía Gascón. Gascón, the first transgender actress to be nominated for a BAFTA in the Leading Actress category, was absent from the ceremony following backlash over resurfaced racist tweets.
