Ranbir Kapoor has become a chameleon by immersing himself in every character he plays. In his recent film, Animal, he goes above and beyond to play a son who goes to whatever lengths necessary to show his father how much he loves him. He plays a vile character that we’ve seen in Bollywood history that makes you despise him even though he says otherwise.
Ultimately a story of Ranvijay Singh taking revenge for his father Balbir Singh, there’s a lot of twists and turns that are unexpected. The violence is gruesome and almost sickening, but is needed to delve deeper into Ranvijay’s psyche to help us understand his motives. His eerie resemblance to Sanjay Dutt in some scenes, essential to his Sanju biopic, echoes the vulnerability within his bad boy personality.
Although a key role if not a lengthy one, Anil Kapoor shows his mastery by exploding and restraining at all the right places. Until Bobby Deol comes along, the film belongs to Ranbir Kapoor. He cannot speak yet burns the screen on the strength of his evil stares and savage energy. When he faces off Vijay in what can be best described as a rumble on the runway, the latter has lost his hearing too.
The film is incredibly though-provoking and is a look into masculinity. Why do we need it? What is it for? These questions will make you sit and take you on a rollercoaster ride of violence and gore.
