The former Chief Minister of Uttarakhand, Shri Tirath Singh Rawat, unveiled the scholarly work titled ‘Garhwal Ka Beda Samaj: Ek Adhyan’ at the Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts (IGNCA). This publication is part of the research project initiated by the Janapada Sampada Division of IGNCA, focusing on Uttarakhand’s rich culture.
The event, held at the IGNCA auditorium, commenced with a welcome address by Professor K. Anil Kumar, Head of the Janapada Sampada Division. Notable attendees included Dr. Ramakar Pant, Head of the ‘Aadi Drishya’ Division, Manoj Chandola, the author of the book, and several senior journalists and intellectuals from Uttarakhand.
The program featured a screening of a compelling documentary produced in collaboration with ‘Himadri Productions’, shedding light on the vibrant Beda community of Garhwal. This convergence of scholarly research, cultural celebration, and visual storytelling paid homage to Uttarakhand’s heritage.
IGNCA, specializing in Indian culture and art, has long been committed to researching and documenting regional traditions. The changing social fabric of Uttarakhand, influenced by global shifts like migration and urbanization, has prompted a crucial mission to safeguard regional traditions and folk culture, undertaken by IGNCA.
Former Chief Minister Shri Tirath Singh Rawat emphasized Uttarakhand’s diverse cultural landscape during the book release, urging a return to cultural roots. He expressed concern about the fading traditions due to migration but highlighted a growing awareness, citing PM Narendra Modi’s ‘Vocal for Local’ initiative.
Author Manoj Chandola highlighted the collaborative effort between ‘Himadri Productions’ and IGNCA in studying the Beda Samaj, emphasizing the society’s role in shaping music and folk forms in Garhwal. Chandola underscored the need to preserve and promote folk genres in the face of globalization challenges.
Professor Anil Kumar, in his welcome address, elaborated on IGNCA’s dedication to documenting Uttarakhand’s living heritage, particularly focusing on the authentic Beda community singers across five districts of Garhwal.
The event was anchored by Mrs. Lakshmi Rawat from the Janapada Sampada Division, who extended a formal vote of thanks and gratitude to the guests and attendees. This occasion exemplified a harmonious blend of scholarly pursuits, cultural reverence, and a commitment to preserving Uttarakhand’s unique traditions.
