England goalkeeper Mary Earps honoured with BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2023 on Tuesday, making her the second woman to win the title.

“I’m very honoured and humbled. For me, I feel like this is the ultimate all round sporting accolade. And I think us as Lionesses and obviously United as well, we’ve had an incredible couple of years. This is just wow,” said the 30-year-old footballer.

Meanwhile, England cricketer Stuart Broad came second and Katarina Johnson-Thompson took third place for the prestigious BBC award.

Jockey Frankie Dettori, wheelchair tennis player Alfie Hewett and golfer Rory McIlroy were also shortlisted for the award by a panel of experts, with the winner decided by a public vote.

Earps winning the title is also remarkable because she is the third women to win it in row after tennis player Emma Raducanu’s won it in 2021—first time it has happened since the 1960s.

Even though England lost to Spain by 1-0 in World Cup finals, but Earps performance throughout the tournament was exceptional and her dedication towards the game made her the standout player this year. Als0, the team reached the Women’s World Cup final for the first time.

In seven matches, Earps conceded only four goals and kept three clean sheets, which led her win the World Cup’s Golden Glove award as well.
