British-American rapper 21 Savage, on Monday, dropped the trailer for his upcoming film “American Dream: The 21 Savage Story”. The movie, directed by Donald Glover, Stephen Glover, Jamal Olori, and Fam Udeorji, will showcase three generations of 21 Savage (real name Shéyaa Bin Abraham-Joseph) – played by ‘Stranger Things’ star Caleb McLaughlin, and Glover himself. The four-minute trailer showed how the wrapper handled himself “in the heat of a personal crisis”.
McLaughlin plays the Grammy-winning rapper’s younger self. The trailer shows how the budding musician moved from the United Kingdom to Atlanta in the United States and found himself on the wrong side of the law. As for Glover, he displays the phase of his life when he started making music and rapping with American record producer Metro Boomin (played by Jabari Banks) before the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) took him into custody.
The trailer also shows how he got to celebrate his victories – winning his first Grammy in 2020 for best rap song with “A Lot”. Towards the end of the trailer, he was also knighted by Natasha Lyonne’s character.
According to the trailer, American Dream is all set to hit the screens on Independence Day, while the “music inspired by the film” will be released on January 12.
The trailer also gives a glimpse of the rapper’s new track, which starts off with a sample of Rose Royce‘s 1978 hit “Wishing on a Star.”
Other cast of the movie are Victoria Pedretti (The Haunting of Hill House), Young Mazino (Beef), Chad Lindberg (Fast & Furious), Gail Bean (Snowfall), and Druski (Praise This).
What hit home in the trailer is a dialogue sequence exchanged between Glover as Savage inside the studio with a friend.
“When I first got in, they ain’t even giving me a name. Just number 21. [They] treated us like Savages,” says Glover as Savage.
“That’s your name,” the friend says. “Savage 21.”
