One of Calvin Klein’s advertisements featuring singer FKA twigs has been banned after receiving complaints regarding the use of images, calling them “overly sexualised”.

The advertisement poster featured singer FKA twigs in a denim shirt that was drawn halfway around her body, showing the side of her buttocks and half of one breast.

The caption in the poster read, “Calvins or nothing”.

The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) noted that the ad may cause serious offence as it objectifies women.

The authority ruled the “image’s composition placed viewers’ focus on the model’s body rather than on the clothing being advertised”.

It further said that as the ad focuses on FKA twigs’ “physical features”, it had “presented her as a stereotypical sexual object”.

“We therefore concluded the ad was irresponsible and likely to cause serious offence,” it said.

In its defence, Calvin Klein said that its advert had been similar to those it had been releasing in the UK for many years.

The brand claimed that it sees the singer FKA twigs as a “confident and empowered woman” and said that she actively participated with the company to produce the image and had approved it before publication.
