Paramount is gearing up for the third installment in the ‘Top Gun’ franchise, with hopes to bring back the iconic series for another takeoff.

The plan is to reunite Tom Cruise with his fellow Maverick co-stars Miles Teller and Glen Powell. This news follows Tom Cruise’s recent deal with Warner Bros. Discovery, expecting the actor to act and produce movies for Warners. However, the deal is non-exclusive.

Ehren Kruger, co-writer of ‘Top Gun: Maverick’, is working on the script, and Joe Kosinski, the director of ‘Maverick’, is expected to direct the project, according to reports.

The Top Gun sequel has been in development since late fall, separate from the recent deal. Cruise’s recent movies have largely been at Paramount, though he did not have a deal there.

In 2022, Maverick made $1.5 billion globally at the box office. The film considered a savior for the struggling theatrical business during the pandemic prompted Steven Spielberg to credit Tom Cruise. This achievement followed Tony Scott’s original Top Gun in 1986, helping Cruise to establish himself as a Hollywood sensation.

Despite the buzz, the next Top Gun installment won’t hit screens anytime soon. Cruise is currently filming the eighth ‘Mission: Impossible movie’, slated for release in May 2025.
