Casey Stoney and Laura Harvey are the frontrunners to replace Chelsea manager Emma Hayes as the club begins their interview process. When senior players were asked if they want a man or a woman manager, the players leaned towards a woman, saying it will be easier to work. While Casey and Laura lead the race, others too are being vetted.

Hayes is leaving Chelsea as she prepares to take charge of the United States women’s national team, who are a four-time world champions.

Stoney, who played under Hayes back in the day, is still considering whether to return o the WSL. She had left Manchester United for San Diego Wave in 2021. She guided her California team into the play-offs in the very first year of being in charge. By doing this, the club became the first expansion side to reach that stage. It won the NWSL Shield in 2023.

A former Arsenal manager, Harvey is currently at Seattle Reign, and was a club guest at Stamford Bridge for the Champions League match against Hacken in December. A former USWNT assistant, she has won three Shield titles with Seattle Reign and also guided them to three Championship games.

Carla Ward, Aston Villa manager, and former assistant of Hayes, Tanya Oxtonby, have also been considered for the top job.

While Hayes is consulting on the process, co-sporting directors Paul Winstanley and Laurence Stewart, who lead on all men’s, women’s and academy matters, will take the final call.

While being in charge of Chelsea for 12 years, Hayes has won 15 major trophies. Courtesy of her, Chelsea has become a contending force in the English women’s football, winning four successive WSL titles.
