Delhi has come under a thick blanket of air pollution as 30 trains were delayed and 17 flights were cancelled, with 30 of them being delayed due to low visibility amid dense fog, news agency ANI reported, citing city officials. This is the first time that AQI has gone up to the severe category in 2024.

A large number of passengers were left stranded for hours at New Delhi Railway Station and Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA).

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the city’s Palam(VIDP) and Safdarjung Airports recorded visibilities within 500 metres in the morning.

The weather agency forecast a fog patch over the northern and north-eastern states with low visibility areas recorded in the airports situated in these states.

“Layer of fog is seen from Punjab to northeast India across Haryana, North MP, UP, Bihar and West Bengal at 0530 hrs IST. The patches of fog are also seen along the east coast of India as shown in the attached Satellite Imagery,” the IMD said in a post on X.

Earlier on 14th January, the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) reimposed GRAP 3 with immediate effect to curb the alarming deterioration of air quality in the National Capital Region (NCR).

Under GRAP 3, all nonessential construction work across NCR will be shut down; all mining and associated activities will be suspended; plying of BS-III petrol and BS-IV diesel four-wheelers prohibited in the NCR region.
