YouTube on Wednesday became the latest company to bring back the layoff season in tech industries by firing 100 employees. YouTube, which is Google’s video platform, continued the piecemeal layoffs after Google shed more than a thousand employees in the past week.

According to an email reviewed by the New York Times, the areas affected were YouTube’s operations and creator management. As of Tuesday, YouTube employed 7,173 people, NYT quoted a source.

“We’ve made the decision to eliminate some roles and say goodbye to some of our teammates,” YouTube’s chief business officer, Mary Ellen Coe, wrote in a note to employees at the organization.

“Anyone in the Americas” and the Asia-Pacific region “who is or may be impacted will be notified by the end of day today,” the note read.

In the past year, YouTube struggled to recover from an advertising slowdown, with contenders like TikTok chiming in the short-video service platforms.

Google, on the other hand, has been looking for ways to cut costs. As a result, last Thursday, the tech giant eliminated more than a thousand jobs from its core engineering division, Google Assistant, and some within its augmented reality section.

“We’re responsibly investing in our company’s biggest priorities and the significant opportunities ahead,” Andrea Faville, YouTube’s head of corporate communications, said in a statement.

In a note to employees, Google’s chief executive Sundar Pichai said that they should anticipate more cuts in the coming months. However, these cuts won’t be as big as last year.

YouTube employees, who were laid off, have 60 days to find new roles within the company before their termination takes effect.
