Actor-musician Shruti Haasan is set to headline ‘Chennai Story’, an India-U.K. film co-production, according to Deadline report.

Haasan is known for her versatile roles across India’s various language film industries and in the US and UK. She played a pivotal role in the 2023 blockbuster ‘Salaar’ and took the lead in the British thriller ‘The Eye’. Her notable international credits include a key role in the 2019 USA series ‘Treadstone’.

The plotline of ‘Chennai Story’ is adapted from Timeri N. Murari’s bestselling 2004 novel ‘The Arrangements of Love’. The film presents a coming-of-age romantic comedy unfolding against the scenic backdrops of Wales and India. Haasan will portray the spirited character Anu, a private detective, originally intended for Samantha Ruth Prabhu, who has taken a year’s sabbatical for health reasons. The cast also features Viveik Kalra, renowned for his lead role in ‘Blinded by the Light’ and currently starring in the Netflix heist thriller ‘Lift’.

BAFTA-winning director Philip John, known for his work on ‘Downton Abbey’, takes the helm as the writer and director of the film. Collaborating on the screenplay is British Sri Lankan actor Nimmi Harasgama, acclaimed for her role as the female lead in ‘Funny Boy’. The film is crafted in English but weaves in elements of Tamil and Welsh.

Graham Frake will take charge of cinematography for ‘Chennai Story’ and Ciaran Thompson will serve as the production designer.

The film is being produced in a collaborative effort by India’s Guru Films, the UK’s Ripple World Pictures and Wales’ Ie Ie Productions under the bilateral UK-India co-production treaty. The film is backed by the British Film Institute‘s (BFI) U.K. Global Screen Fund. Metro International is handling global sales.
