Singer-songwriter Annie Lennox ended her Grammys performance by calling for a ceasefire in Gaza on Sunday. She performed “Nothing Compares 2 U” as a tribute to the late Sinéad O’Connor during the ‘In Memoriam’ segment of the Grammys. Towards the end of her emotional performance, Lennox asked for world peace and held her left hand to the sky and exclaimed, “artists for cease fire, peace in the world,” adding to O’Connor’s own activism as the singer has spoken about human rights, racism and organized religion. O’Connor died in July 2023 at the age of 56. The late singer converted to Islam in 2018 and changed her name to Shuhada’ Sadaqat. She was banned from Saturday Night Live for tearing up a photo of Pope John Paul II during her performance two years later. The track “Nothing Compares 2 U” was extracted from her second album, “I Do Not Want What I Haven’t Got,” which topped in the US for six weeks and achieved double platinum status. It won a Grammy for Best Alternative Music Performance at the 33rd annual ceremony. However, O’Connor chose not to attend the ceremony or accept the Grammy. Instead, she penned a letter to the Recording Academy, voicing her criticism of its promotion of materialistic values over artistic merit. In last few months, Lennox has persistently campaigned for a ceasefire in Gaza. On Sunday, she took to Instagram, sharing a lengthy caption expressing her outrage over the continuous bombings in Gaza. “Is there ANY point in posting every day to keep calling for peace and ceasefire, while it’s perfectly obvious that the military objective is to bring about the total decimation of Gaza and her people?” she wrote. “I find it impossible to witness these appalling atrocities and just be indifferent or silent,” the caption read.
