On Super Bowl Sunday, Paramount, Universal and Disney will spend a record $7 million per 30-second spot to showcase their movie titles. While one may think that the aftermath of the strikes may have dislodged the domestic box office (it is 13% behind the same period a year ago), most major studio and streaming executives tout it as a temporary setback. As per reports, the executives think that the Super Bowl is the perfect time and place to get things back on track when an audience of 100 million viewers will witness the San Francisco 49ers and Kansas City Chiefs lock horns this coming Sunday.
Paramount Pictures has reserved three slots for airing commercials, which can be scheduled before, during, or after the game. These slots will feature the February 14 release, “Bob Marley: One Love,” a music biopic, John Krasinski’s “IF,” a movie about Ryan Reynolds’ imaginary friend, set to release on May 17, and the highly anticipated genre prequel, “A Quiet Place: Day One,” hitting theaters on June 28.
With Disney, expect to see promotions for the Father’s Day weekend premiere of “Inside Out 2” on June 14, as well as the debut trailer and a stunt featuring Ryan Reynolds for Marvel Studios’ “Deadpool 3” on July 26. Additionally, keep an eye out for “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” from 20th Century Fox, set to hit theaters on May 10.
Universal is prepared with potential commercial spots for several major releases, including “Twisters” on July 19, DreamWorks Animation’s “Kung Fu Panda 4,” Monkeypaw’s new horror film “Monkeyman” on April 5, and the summer kickoff “The Fall Guy” on May 3.
And of course, it wouldn’t be a Super Bowl without the Minions. Following the release of the first trailer for Illumination’s “Despicable Me 4” on July 3 during the AFC Championship Game two weeks ago, anticipate more antics from these banana-obsessed creatures this weekend.
Additionally, there’s buzz that “Wicked: Part One” will unveil its trailer.
As far as Sony and Warner Bros are concerned, despite having movies on their calendars, they haven’t booked any spots and is expected to give the event a miss. Amazon MGM Studios, too, isn’t in the mix.
