Dave Bautista and Samuel L Jackson have found their next big-canvas action movie in the form a post-apocalyptic adventure named ‘Afterburn,’ Deadline reported. The Guardian of the Galaxy and Dune actor will be playing the role of a former soldier, Jake, who is employed as a treasure hunter, who recovers valuable objects from the old world for powerful clients. The Django Unchained actor will play the supporting role of freedom fighter Valentine.
The story is set 10 years after a solar flare has wiped out technology across the globe. In the movie, Jake’s latest mission requires him to join hands with freedom fighter Drea to recover the Mona Lisa before an unhinged warlord gets there first.
As per a Deadline report, the story is adapted from the Red 5 comic/graphic novel series of the same name.
Ahead of next week’s European Film Market, Black Bear and CAA Media Finance will launch the project for sales. At the market, it aims to be one of the biggest-budget new packages with an imminent start date.
JJ Perry has been roped in to direct the film; he recently wrapped up production on Lionsgate’s The Killer’s Game, also with Bautista. Perry is famously known for his work as a second-unit director and stunt coordinator on the John Wick and Fast & The Furious franchises.
For Original Film, Neal H. Moritz (Fast and Furious franchise) and Toby Jaffe (Total Recall) are the producers. For Endurance Media, which is also financing, Steve Richards (Sherlock Holmes franchise, The Matrix trilogy) is the producer.
Bautista will also produce through Dogbone Entertainment.
Bautista’s next will be Dune: Part Two and My Spy: The Eternal City for Amazon through his Dogbone banner. As for Jackson, he recently starred in Argylle and has The Garfield Movie and The Piano Lesson coming up.
Perry made his directorial debut in the 2022 film Day Shift, the action-comedy at Netflix starring Jamie Foxx, Dave Franco and Snoop Dogg.
