Disney has announced a sequel to the beloved film ‘Moana,’ which is scheduled to release in theatres on 27th November, announced by CEO Bob Iger on CNBC. He revealed that it was originally planned as a TV series, which evolved into a feature film after impressive footage caught his attention.

‘Moana 2’ will continue the adventures of Moana and Maui, taking audiences on an expansive new voyage with a brand-new crew of seafarers. When Moana receives a call from her wayfinding ancestors, she embarks on a journey into dangerous and long-lost waters, promising an adventure unlike any she has faced before.

“’Moana’ remains an incredibly popular franchise,” expressed Bob Iger. “We can’t wait to give you more of Moana and Maui when ‘Moana 2’ comes to theaters this November,” he added.

According to a Variety report, Disney said, “Moana 2” will take audiences on an “expansive new voyage with Moana, Maui and a brand-new crew of unlikely seafarers. After receiving an unexpected call from her wayfinding ancestors, Moana must journey to the far seas of Oceania and into dangerous, long-lost waters for an adventure unlike anything she’s ever faced.”

‘Moana’ was a box office sensation for Disney, grossing over $680 million worldwide. The animated musical also enjoyed a resurgence on Disney+, with viewers streaming over 1 billion hours of the film last year.

CEO Bob Iger’s decision to release ‘Moana 2’ in theaters comes after a challenging year for Disney at the box office in 2023. Despite setbacks like Disney Animation’s ‘Wish’ and underperformers such as ‘The Marvels,’ ‘Haunted Mansion,’ and ‘Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny,’ Pixar’s ‘Elemental’ faced initial struggles but managed to rebound with a global haul of $496 million.
