The latest research findings from University College London (UCL) highlight significant concerns among teenagers regarding future parenthood and their perceived lack of adequate education on reproductive health.

According to UCL researchers, nearly half of teenagers express worries about becoming parents in the future, with many feeling underserved by current reproductive health education. They advocate for updating the relationships and sex education curriculum to address these concerns.

Senior author Professor Joyce Harper, from the UCL EGA Institute for Women’s Health, said, “Sadly, a number of female students expressed a lack of interest in future parenthood due to their fears about pregnancy and childbirth.”

“Shortcomings in fertility education in schools also meant that students were left feeling both ill-informed and negative towards their own fertility and ability to have children,” added Harper.

Two recent studies, published in Human Fertility and the Health Education Journal, analyzed data from a survey of 931 school pupils aged 16 to 18 in England. The survey revealed that while almost two-thirds (64%) of students aspire to have children later in life, 45% harbour apprehensions about future parenthood.

Conducted between May 2021 and July 2022 across 20 schools in England, the online poll shed light on various factors influencing students’ desires regarding parenthood. Some students expressed hesitancy due to concerns about climate change, while others considered alternative routes to parenthood.

Those disinterested in having children cited reasons such as the perceived instability of the world, anxieties about parenthood, and negative perceptions of pregnancy and childbirth. For instance, one female student highlighted the chaotic state of global affairs, environmental degradation, and governmental corruption as deterrents to parenthood.

Overall, the research underscores the need for comprehensive reproductive health education that addresses teenagers’ concerns about parenthood and empowers them with accurate information and positive attitudes towards fertility.
