The Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday defended their Super Bowl title and became back-to-back champions. Not only did they collect another ring, but also set the record for the most-watched Super Bowl of all time.
Super Bowl LVIII recorded an audience of 123.4 million viewers on CBS, Nickelodeon, Univision, and digital platforms including NFL+. The numbers mean that it climbed 7% from last year’s record-breaking audience of 115.1M on Fox, as per Nielsen data.
CBS stands tall with 120M watching on the broadcast network alone, the numbers marked the largest audience in history for a single network. Nielsen reported that more than 200M viewers tuned in for at least part of the game across networks – up 10% from last year’s figure of 184M.
The 2024 Super Bowl is not only the most-watched event, but it is also the second most-watched TV program in history. The first place goes to the 1969 Apollo 11 moon landing but it was aired across multiple networks.
The numbers mean that the Chiefs have played in — and won — the two most-watched Super Bowls of all time.
In January, the Chiefs brushed aside the Baltimore Ravens in the most-watched AFC Championship Game of all time. As the Chiefs were going all in in terms of getting their third Super Bowl win in five years, the event was expected to be a highly anticipated game, irrespective of the outcome.
CBS now claims three of the Top 10 most-viewed Super Bowl audiences in history. Among them are Super Bowl 50 (featuring the Denver Broncos vs. the Carolina Panthers) and Super Bowl XLVII (highlighting the Baltimore Ravens vs. the San Francisco 49ers).
