Disney, on Thursday, revealed the first still from its upcoming project Tron: Ares, which is the third instalment in the Tron sci-fi franchise, which went into production in Vancouver in January. The film is slated for release in 2025.

The film stars Jared Leto and follows a highly sophisticated Program, Ares, who is sent from the digital world into the real world on a dangerous mission, marking humankind’s first encounter with A.I. beings.

The film is directed by Joachim Rønning, who directed both the Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales and Maleficent: Mistress of Evil for Disney. Rønning’s breakout film was 2012’s Kon-Tiki, with Greta Lee, Evan Peters, Hasan Minhaj, Jodie Turner-Smith, Arturo Castro, Cameron Monaghan, and Gillian Anderson.

Jesse Wigutow and Jack Thorne wrote the script with Tron: Ares along with Sean Bailey, Jeffrey Silver, Justin Springer, Leto, Emma Ludbrook. Steven Lisberger will be producing alongside executive producer Russell Allen.

The Tron franchise kicked off with the iconic 1982 film titled “Tron,” featuring Jeff Bridges as video game creator Kevin Flynn. Despite initial challenges during its theatrical release, it garnered praise for its groundbreaking visual effects and later gained a devoted cult following. This was followed by the 2010 sequel, “Tron: Legacy,” which introduced Garrett Hedlund and Olivia Wilde to the cast. The sequel performed well, earning just over $400 million during its debut over the holiday season.

In a statement accompanying the release of the first look Tron still, Rønning said, “I’m excited to be part of the TRON franchise and bring this new film to fans around the world. ‘TRON: Ares’ builds upon the legacy of cutting-edge design, technology and storytelling. Now more than ever, it feels like the right time to return to the Grid.”
