IATSE and the Hollywood Basic Crafts unions began bargaining on Monday, focusing on pension and health-related matters. The negotiations kicked off at 2 p.m. following a significant rally on Sunday, where union leaders cautioned about potential labour unrest if an agreement isn’t reached by the contract deadline of July 31.

The discussions began with a notable presence of crew union representatives, aiming to negotiate with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers, representing major studios.

Both parties agreed to maintain a media blackout during negotiations, indicating a mutual understanding that disclosing specific proposals to the press could hinder progress.

Following the first day of bargaining, Hollywood’s major crew unions informed their members that talks are expected to continue throughout the week. In an update shared on social media by IATSE, it was mentioned that the unions presented their initial proposals earlier in the day. IATSE international president Matthew Loeb emphasized the need for increased protection, reliability, and predictability in employment, highlighting the dedication of workers despite the challenging industry environment.

According to a timeline provided on the union’s websites, members are advised to anticipate either a ratification vote for a deal around July 31 or a strike authorization vote, contingent on the progress of negotiations.

A pre-negotiations rally held in Encino’s Woodley Park drew around a thousand attendees, with nearly a thousand more tuning in via live stream.

According to reports, the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees, alongside Teamsters Local 399 and other Basic Crafts unions has agreed to jointly address issues concerning the Motion Picture Industry Pension and Health Plans.

One key demand from the unions is a new streaming residual to bolster employer contributions to pension and health plans, a provision unsuccessfully sought during 2021 negotiations.

Despite the anticipated slow pace of negotiations, the unions have affirmed their commitment not to extend contracts beyond the expiration date.
