Oppenheimer eneded its awards-season with the Best Picture win at the 96th Oscars that was held on Sunday at the Dolby Theater in Hollywood. The award was accepted by producers Emma Thomas, Charles Roven and Christopher Nolan.
Nolan won the Best Director award, earning Universal’s film about J. Robert Oppenheimer and his Manhattan Project a leading seven statuettes. “Movies are just just over a 100 years old, and just imagine 100 years into painting or theater. We don’t know where this journey is going from here, but to know that you think I’m a meaningful part of it means the world to me,” Nolan said in accepting the directing prize.
Cillian Murphy took home the Best Actor for Oppenheimer. “For better or worse we made a film about the man who created the atomic bomb, and for better or for worse, we’re all living in Oppenheimer’s world. So I’d like to dedicate this to the peacemakers everywhere,” he said while accepting the award.
Emma Stone won the Best Actress prize for Poor Things, upsetting Killers of the Flower Moon star Lily Gladstone. In her acceptance speech, Stone thanked director Yorgos Lanthimos “for the gift of a lifetime in Bella Baxter.”
Following Oppenheimer, Poor Things stood second with four awards — three of which were won consecutively. A24’s The Zone of Interest is the only other multiple winner on the night.
Universal topped the distributors’ list with seven wins, followed by Searchlight with four, and A24 and Toho each securing two. Notably absent from Sunday’s winners’ circle were Netflix, Sony, Paramount, and Disney among the major studios.
