The Los Angeles Lakers, on Monday, in a statement, said that the spelling error on a Kobe Bryant statue that was unveiled last month will be corrected. The statue is placed outside Crypto.com Arena.
German journalist André Voigt pointed out the mistakes and subsequently put his findings on X, formerly Twitter, on Sunday. The errors include spelling Toronto guard José Calderón as “Jose Calderson” and spelling former Laker Von Wafer as “Vom Wafer,” according to NBC Los Angeles.
The word “decision” is set in bronze as “decicion,” the station said.
The statue’s stance mirrored the iconic moment when the player raised his index finger in triumph after his legendary 81-point performance in the Lakers’ 122-104 victory over the Toronto Raptors on January 22, 2006.
The game marked the second-highest individual scoring performance in NBA history, with Wilt Chamberlain’s 100-point game for the Philadelphia Warriors against the New York Knicks in 1962 still holding the record.
Standing at 19 feet tall, the statue commemorating Bryant, who dedicated his entire career to the Lakers, includes a replica of the scorecard from the Toronto game. NBC Los Angeles noted that Calderón and Wafer’s names, along with the term “decision,” were accurately spelled on the scorecard.
“We have been aware of this for a few weeks and are already working to get it corrected soon,” a Lakers spokesperson said in a statement Monday.
