Visionary filmmaker Ari Aster is at it again. After producing horror hits like Hereditary, Midsommar and last year’s darkly comic Beau Is Afraid, he has his eyes locked on his next project Eddington. Actors, who are set to join Joaquin Phoenix, include Emmy and Golden Globe nominee Pedro Pascal (The Last of Us), Emma Stone (Oscar winner for Poor Things), Luke Grimes (Yellowstone), Dune: Part Two‘s Austin Butler, Deirdre O’Connell (Outer Range), Micheal Ward (Top Boy), and Clifton Collins Jr. (Jockey).
While the plot details are hidden at the moment, it is reported that the project has been discussed as a Western. Along with directing, Aster has also written the script and will be producing alongside Lars Knudsen under their Square Peg banner. Darius Khondji, the Academy Award-winning cinematographer behind Bardo and Uncut Gems, is also aboard the project for his first collaboration with Aster. The film’s production is set to kick off this week.
Aster first collaborated with Phoenix on last year’s surreal horror comedy Beau Is Afraid, helping Phoenix earn a Golden Globe nomination. However, the movie underperformed at the box office.
Before that, he directed the brutal Swedish cult horror Midsommar, starring Florence Pugh. Before this, he helmed 2018’s Hereditary, starring Toni Collette. Debuting from Sundance, the supernatural horror film garnered immense praise and raked in more than $82 million, standing as A24’s top-grossing movie until it was surpassed by the multiple Oscar-winning “Everything Everywhere All at Once.”
Apart from these projects, Aster and Knudsen collaborated with A24 on the dark comedy “Dream Scenario,” which marked the English-language debut of acclaimed Norwegian filmmaker Kristoffer Borgli. The film earned Cage a Golden Globe nomination. Additionally, they worked on “Death of a Unicorne,” a dark comedy featuring Paul Rudd, Jenna Ortega, Richard E. Grant, and others. Shot under an interim agreement last summer, the film’s release date has not yet been announced.
