Dozens of performers and speakers have pulled out of the ongoing South by Southwest festival in Austin, Texas, citing their objection to event sponsorship by the US military and defense companies amid the conflict between Israel and Hamas. The protesting acts have expressed solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza, criticizing the festival’s ties to the defense industry and US support for Israel in the conflict.
The withdrawal of artists, mainly small bands and indie performers, has been announced on social media platforms. Singer-songwriter Ella Williams, known as “Squirrel Flower,” was among the first to boycott the event, condemning SXSW’s connection to the defense industry and expressing support for the Palestinian people.
The festival’s sponsorship by the US Army and several defense companies has come under scrutiny, with at least three events being sponsored by entities with ties to the defense industry. The US government’s support for Israel following Hamas’ attacks has further fueled the controversy.
Despite the boycott, SXSW organizers have defended their decision to accept sponsorship from these entities, citing the historical significance of the defense industry in technological advancements and innovation.
Texas Governor Greg Abbott responded to the protest, expressing support for the US military and dismissing the boycotting artists. SXSW organizers, however, have distanced themselves from Abbott’s stance, emphasizing their respect for artists’ freedom of speech while continuing to support human rights.
The protest has drawn attention to the issue of US weapons companies’ involvement in events like SXSW, with at least 80 acts and speakers withdrawing from the festival in solidarity with the Palestinian cause. The event, known for its convergence of tech, film, and music, has faced criticism over its sponsorship choices amid the ongoing conflict in Gaza.
