On Monday, the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) said it is “considering multiple proposals” to host the 2026 event in 2026 as uncertainty looms over the Games’ long-term future.

In the past week, Singapore joined the list of countries that ruled out hosting the 2026 CWG. Before these two, the Australian state of Victoria withdrew its name as the original host in July because of rising costs.

The CGF, in its first public statement since the updates, said “significant progress had been made”, and it was “excited by the early concepts, which aim to reset and reframe the Games”.

Intending to announce a host in May, the CGF also said it was working with many Commonwealth Games Associations (CGAs) over “further detailed assessments.”

However, the federation did not identify which countries were involved, saying the CGAs had asked to keep the proposals confidential.

“The CGF continues to accelerate work to refresh the Games… including exploring innovative new concepts,” it said.

“Importantly, we have been focusing on how we can transform the Games to a collaborative and truly sustainable model, minimising costs and reducing its environmental footprint, whilst increasing social impact.”

Last month, Malaysia turned down an offer to host the 2026 Games, despite the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) offering £100m in support funds. The Malaysian sports ministry argued that this sum wouldn’t cover the total expenses of hosting the event.

Furthermore, the 2026 Games didn’t make the cut in UK Sport’s list of 70 major events it aimed for Britain to host in the next 15 years. The funding agency questioned the current format’s value.
