India film, Kalki 2898 AD, is set to release worldwide on 27th June 2024 which promises to deep dive into Indian mythology with a mix of science fiction. While there have been a lot of television shows in India that have dealt with Indian mythology at length and a lot of Indian films that have been inspired by different mythological myths this film helmed by director Nag Ashwin is the first film that deep dive into Indian mythology. Led by a stellar cast of internationally renowned actors like Mr. Amitabh Bachchan who was also seen in Leonardo DiCaprio’s The Great GatsbyMr Kamal Haasan who has forever experimented with technology and cinematic brilliance with his films in the past, Prabhas who is known in every corner of the world since Bahubali, and Deepika Padukone who is a global icon. 

But let’s look at some of the Hollywood films that have been inspired by Indian mythology.

1. Avatar: 2009 

James Cameron states in many interviews that the title of the film came from the Sanskrit word which means, “A human incarnation of Gods”. The Blue looks are also inspired by Hindu deities.

2. Dr. Stange: 2016

The film is often compared to Indian mythology because of the origins of Dr. Strange’s power with traces to the spiritual teaching of Hinduism and Buddhism. His hand gestures, powers, and fighting style are inspired by Indian mythology. 

3. The Matrix: 1999

Probably doubted as one of the greatest science fiction films of all time. The film and its two sequels raised several philosophical questions, some of which, as per the filmmakers, the Wachowski siblings are inspired by Hinduism. 

4. Star Wars: 1978 – 2019 

The series of Star Wars films has concepts from Bhagwat Geet which talks about the teacher and student dynamic, commonly known in India as Guru (teacher) and Shishya (Student) Parampara (Dynamics).

5. Interstellar: 2014

The core philosophy of this magnum opus film that became a must watch of its time aligns with Vedik’s concept which is consciousness that transients time and space.

6. X-Men: Apocalypse : 2016

Although seen as the antagonist, Apocalypse in X-Men is inspired by the Hindu God Krishna.
