It’s interesting to think about the Western genre which was so popular in Hollywood’s ‘Golden Era’. Watching wayward cowboys riding their horses across deserted towns made you feel like something was about to start and you couldn’t wait to see what they’d do. No-one knew when they became less popular, but with the release of Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1, it’s sure to bring back that feeling of the old spaghetti western again.

Also what’s interesting is that as the Western is mostly told from the male point of view, we are given a female perspective as well. Sienna Miller who plays the Frances described Frances as a “survivor” and “courageous” and says that to not include women in the story of America would be “disingenuous”. She went on to praise Costner for creating these “incredible characters”.

Miller plays Frances Kittredge, a frontier woman whose husband and sons are killed when a war party of Indigenous men burn down their village. Frances and her young daughter manage to stay alive by hiding underground and using the barrel of a shot gun to breathe air from the surface. They are rescued when the U.S. Cavalry, led by Trent Gephart (Worthington), arrive to escort them to a safer location.

Director and actor Kevin Costner returns in this multi-faceted chronicle covering the Civil War expansion and settlement of the American West. A passion project which he never gave up on, the film debuted at this year’s Cannes Film Festival which received a standing ovation.  Costner’s ambitious cinematic adventure will take audiences on an emotional journey across a country at war with itself, experienced through the lens of families, friends and foes all attempting to discover what it truly means to be the United States of America.

Horizon: An American Saga stars an impressive ensemble that includes Sienna Miller, Sam Worthington and Giovanni Ribisi Abbey Lee, Will Patton, Jena Malone, Michael Rooker, Danny Huston, Luke Wilson, Jeff Fahey, Isabelle Fuhrman, Ella Hunt, David O’Hara, Owen Crow Shoe, Tatanka Means, Tim Guinee, Scott Haze, Tom Payne, Alejandro Edda, James Russo, Jon Beavers, Jaime Campbell Bower and Michael Anganaro, and more.
