In full of drama, Portugal defeated Slovenia Monday in a thrilling shootout to reach the quarter-finals of Euro 2024. The match saw football legend Cristiano Ronaldo in tears after his extra-time penalty was saved, only to recover and lead his team to victory in the shootout. Portugal’s captain had his penalty stopped by Atletico Madrid’s Jan Oblak during extra time, a moment that left him in tears as fans chanted his name and his teammates needed his support. Despite missing the penalty in extra time, Ronaldo composed himself to score Portugal’s first penalty in the shootout. Goalkeeper Diogo Costa then emerged as the hero, saving all three of Slovenia’s attempts. Manchester City’s Bernardo Silva sealed the victory with the decisive kick. Throughout the match, Ronaldo was at the center of the action and Portugal dominated much of the game, with Joao Palhinha hitting the post in the first half. Slovenia, defending with determination, had their own opportunities, most notably when Benjamin Sesko was denied by Costa in a one-on-one situation in the dying moments of extra time. Portugal’s persistence finally paid off as Slovenia faltered in the shootout, allowing Costa’s brilliant saves to secure the win and keep Ronaldo’s Euro dreams alive. Portugal will now face France in the quarter-finals in Hamburg on Friday. Slovenia exits the tournament in heartbreaking fashion, having given their all in a match decided by the narrowest of margins.
