The 81st Venice International Film Festival will commence this year with the highly anticipated world premiere of “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice,” the sequel to Tim Burton’s 1988 comedy-horror classic. The film will debut out of competition on 28th August.
The sequel sees the return of original cast members Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder, and Catherine O’Hara, alongside newcomers Justin Theroux, Monica Bellucci, Jenna Ortega, and Willem Dafoe. Warner Bros. will release the film in North America on 6th September, with international releases starting on 4th September.
“’Beetlejuice Beetlejuice’ marks the long-awaited return of one of the most iconic characters of Tim Burton’s cinema, but also the happy confirmation of the extraordinary visionary talent and the masterly realization of one of the most fascinating auteurs of his time,” said Venice artistic director Alberto Barbera. He added that the festival was “honored and proud to host the world premiere of a work that features a surprising swing of creative imagination and driving hallucinatory rhythm.”
Tim Burton expressed his excitement, stating, “I’m very excited by this. It means a lot to me to have the world premiere of this film at the Venice Film Festival.”
Warner Bros. has a history of successful premieres in Venice. In 2019, Todd Phillips’ “Joker” debuted on the Lido, winning Venice’s Golden Lion for best film and becoming a blockbuster and awards-season contender. Similarly, in 2021, Denis Villeneuve’s adaptation of “Dune” premiered in Venice, generating significant buzz and contributing to its over $400 million global gross.
The 81st Venice Film Festival will run from 28th August to 7th September.
