Independent filmmaker Siddharth Chauhan’s eagerly awaited debut feature film, “Amar Colony,” is set to premiere on Open Theatre on 5th July. The film promises to offer viewers a unique and thought-provoking exploration of the human condition.
Sharing his excitement of releasing his film on OTT, Chauhan said, “Such platforms are a saviour for independent filmmakers like us. They provide a much-needed outlet for our creative expression, allowing us to reach a wider audience and showcase our work without the constraints of traditional channels.”
Shot in Shimla, “Amar Colony” is an absurdist drama about the lives of three neighbors dealing with their loneliness, regret, and fear. Recently, the film was premiered at Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival, where it received a Special Jury Prize for its originality of vision at Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival, making Chauhan the first Indian director to win an award at this festival, one of the top 14 A-List Film Festivals in the world.
Following its European premiere, the film had its Indian premiere at the International Film Festival of Kerala (IFFK), where Chauhan received the Best Indian Debut Director Award.
“Amar Colony” stars Nimisha Nair, Sangeeta Agrawal, Usha Chauhan, Sreejith Vijay, Ayush Shrivastava, and Deepak Sharma. “Amar Colony,” takes viewers on a captivating journey into the lives of the residents of a small apartment complex nestled in the foothills of the Himalayas. Through a blend of reality and fantasy, the narrative delves into the characters’ deepest desires, frustrations, and struggles.
Chauhan expressed his excitement about the project, stating, “Amar Colony isn’t your typical film. It’s a deeply personal project, a world I hold close, filled with characters wrestling with their inner turmoil. Each one grapples with a touch of delusion, and the atmosphere is undeniably absurd. My biggest champions were the producers, who believed in my vision and gave me the freedom to create something truly unconventional.”
“Amar Colony’s” OTT release is also a motivation boost for independent filmmakers. “The love and praise which Amar Colony is receiving, is inspiring me to stay true to my vision and push the boundaries of storytelling. May my journey motivate many more independent filmmakers to pursue their passion projects,” said Chauhan.
The film explores profound themes such as the emptiness felt by Devki in her restrictive home, the crushing loneliness Meera experiences while wandering desolate corridors, and the purposelessness that colors Durga’s life amidst her religious delusions. Chauhan described the film as a “showcase of the human condition through a warped, yet strangely relatable, lens.”
Produced by Indie Film Collective, a film initiative launched by Nisheeth Kumar and his friends in India in 2018, in association with Goopy Bagha Productions, “Amar Colony” is a culmination of love and passion.
