In total 21 schools have been equipped with solar-powered smart classes in Himachal Pradesh with recent installation in three schools in Pangi region of Chamba to address the urgent need for modern educational tools in today’s world.

The solar-powered smart classes have been introduced in three government senior secondary schools in the Pangi landscape including Sechu Nala, Dharwas, and Sach.

The initiative is a part of the Himalay Unnati Mission under the leadership of founder and spiritual guru Sri Sri Ravi Shankar of Art of Living organization. The project has been supported by Luminous Company through its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) efforts aimed at bringing sustainable development of the Himalayan regions.

The project began in early months of 2024 overcoming communication challenges while transporting smart classes equipments in the remote villages as many of them are only accessible by foot even after commuting via bus or private transportations.

Pangi is located at an altitude ranging from 7,000 to 11,000 feet, bordered by Padder (Jammu and Kashmir) to the north, Lahaul and Spiti to the west, and Chamba to the southeast that adds charm to the valley’s remoteness.

These smart classes are set to bridge the gap for students in remote areas, providing them with access to quality education. In addition to the technological upgrade, a three-day personality development training camp has also been organized for students and teachers in these schools. Instructors from the Art of Living organization are leading these camps, focusing on holistic development alongside academic progress.

Suraj Prakash, community coordinator of the Himalay Unnati Mission, highlighted that the Model Landscape Development Program has been active in the Pangi Valley for the past year. “This program aims to innovate the education of local children through modern technology,” he said.

Prakash further shared that the “solar-powered smart classes have been set up in three schools, with plans to expand the initiative based on the positive outcomes observed.”

The introduction of smart classes in these schools is expected to revolutionize the learning experience, making it more interactive and engaging. Students in remote areas often miss out on the benefits of modern education due to lack of resources.

“Smart classes are essential in today’s educational landscape, especially for students in the remotest areas. They provide an interactive and engaging learning experience, helping students stay abreast of the latest educational content and methodologies,” said Prakash.

With the implementation of these smart classes, they now have the opportunity to access high-quality educational content, use interactive learning tools, and stay updated with the latest advancements in various subjects.

Besides educational innovation, the Himalay Unnati Mission is also working on livelihood projects in the Pangi Valley under the Model Scenario Development Program that includes developing action plans for skill development, aiming to provide sustainable employment opportunities for the local community.
