London Mayor Sadiq Khan has announced the inclusion of all-electric tram-buses into services on the streets of the capital. The innovative vehicles, known as ieTrams, will operate on route 358, connecting Orpington with Crystal Palace in south-east London. Originally scheduled for an early 2023 launch, these buses are now expected to begin service later this summer.

“The all-electric Route 358 ieTram buses are expected to start operating in summer 2024. They will be Transport for London’s (TfL) first end to end ‘Opportunity Charging’ trial, and it is important to get the hardware installed properly before the buses are introduced,” said Khan’s office.

The fleet of 20 ieTrams, designed and built by Spanish company Irizar e-mobility, features cutting-edge pantograph technology. This allows the buses to receive quick-boost charges at either end of the route, enabling them to operate throughout the day without the need for overnight charging. Each opportunity charge takes approximately 10 minutes, ensuring minimal downtime.

Key design features of the ieTrams include large windows for ample natural light and covered wheels for enhanced safety of pedestrians and cyclists. Additionally, the buses are equipped with sliding doors and a low floor to improve accessibility and reduce dwell time at bus stops.

These hybrid tram-buses, debuting on the 358 route, will offer a modern and efficient travel option for Londoners, providing comfort and protection from the elements for the standard bus fare of £1.75.
