DreamWorks Animation has officially announced the development of “Shrek 5,” set for release on 1st July, 2026. Original stars Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, and Cameron Diaz are all confirmed to return. However, Antonio Banderas’ reprisal of his role as Puss in Boots remains unconfirmed.

Walt Dohrn, who has been involved with the franchise since “Shrek 2” and served as head of story on “Shrek Forever After,” will direct the upcoming project. Gina Shay, a returning producer, and Illumination founder Chris Meledandri will produce the film, with Brad Ableson serving as a co-director.

Eddie Murphy revealed in June that he had already started recording for the film and mentioned plans for a Donkey spinoff movie. “We started doing [‘Shrek 5’] months ago,” Murphy told Collider. “I did this. I recorded the first act, and we’ll be doing it this year, we’ll finish it up. ‘Shrek’ is coming out and Donkey’s gonna have his own movie.”

The “Shrek” franchise, which includes four feature films released between 2001 and 2010, has been a massive success. The original “Shrek” grossed $487 million globally and won the first Oscar for Best Animated Feature. “Shrek 2” was even more successful, grossing $928 million. Though “Shrek the Third” and “Shrek Forever After” received less acclaim, they still grossed $813 million and $752 million worldwide, respectively. The “Puss in Boots” spinoffs were also hits, with the latest, “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish,” earning $484 million worldwide and receiving an Oscar nomination for Best Animated Feature.

“Shrek 5” promises to bring back the beloved characters while introducing new adventures, continuing the legacy of one of animation’s most successful franchises.
