The Indian box office has crossed INR50 billion ($600 million) in gross collections for the first half of 2024, marking a 3% increase from the same period last year, according to a report from Ormax Media. The report focuses on Indian local numbers, not worldwide grosses.

Leading the charge is the sci-fi epic “Kalki 2898 AD,” which grossed $92.3 million locally. This sum contributed 15% of the total box office, significantly boosting June’s collections to over $144 million. Bollywood air force action film “Fighter” followed in second place with $29 million, and the Telugu-language mythological superhero film “Hanu-Man” secured third with $28.7 million.

The other top-grossing films include Bollywood suspense thriller ‘Shaitaan with $21.3 million; Malayalam survival drama “Manjummel Boys” with  $20.3 million; Telugu action drama “Guntur Kaaram” with $17 million; Hollywood film “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” with $16.2 million; Bollywood horror comedy “Munjya” with $14.4 million; Malayalam drama “The Goat Life” with $12.4 million and Malayalam drama “Aavesham” with $12 million. Notably, Tamil films, which had three entries in the Top 10 last year, were absent from the list.

The first half of 2024 saw significant shifts in the language dynamics of the Indian film industry as Malayalam-language cinema tripled its market share to 15%, surpassing its entire 2023 gross within the first six months. Whereas Bollywood’s Hindi-language films experienced a slight dip, falling to 35% from 37% the previous year, attributed to the absence of a hit comparable to 2023’s “Pathaan.” Telugu-language cinema remained steady with a 23% market share. Tamil-language and Hollywood releases each saw a drop in market share by five percentage points, settling at 12% and 7% respectively. On the other hand, Punjabi-language cinema increased its share to 3%, bolstered by the success of “Jatt & Juliet 3” and Kannada-language films saw a significant downturn, claiming just 1% of the market share.

The report anticipates a robust second half of the year with high-profile releases across multiple languages, including “Pushpa 2: The Rule,” “Stree 2,” “Singham Again,” “The Greatest of All Time,” and “Devara.” If these films perform well, 2024’s overall box office could potentially match or exceed that of 2023.

Peter Friedlander, vice president of scripted series (US & Canada) for Netflix, said, “We’re thrilled to collaborate once again with dream partners Matt, Ross, and Hilary to bring this unexpected and spine-tingling story to life through Haley’s uniquely riveting vision.”
