Bob Newhart, the iconic American comedian known for his deadpan delivery and groundbreaking stand-up routines, has passed away at the age of 94, reported BBC. According to his publicist, Newhart died peacefully at his home following a series of brief illnesses.
Newhart’s career began as an accountant before he ventured into stand-up comedy in Chicago. His unique style earned him a place as a frequent guest host on Johnny Carson’s The Tonight Show, where he appeared 87 times.
In addition to his influential stand-up career, Newhart gained fame through his roles in television and film, including his notable performances in the classic Christmas movie Elf and the hit TV series The Big Bang Theory.
Born in a Chicago suburb to a plumber, Newhart graduated with a business degree from Loyola University in 1952. He served two years in the Army during the Korean War before briefly attending law school, which he left to pursue comedy. His breakthrough came in 1959 when a local DJ introduced him to Warner Bros Records, leading to the release of his groundbreaking album, The Button-Down Mind of Bob Newhart. This album became the first comedy record to top the charts, and Newhart went on to release seven more successful albums.
