Ellipsis Entertainment, known for its acclaimed films like “Do Aur Do Pyaar” and “Sharmajee Ki Beti,” is set to produce a new film based on the infamous 1971 Nagarwala case, which caused a major scandal at a Delhi branch of the State Bank of India, according to Variety report.

The untitled project will explore the story of Rustom Sohrab Nagarwala, an alleged double agent who reportedly impersonated Prime Minister Indira Gandhi to persuade the head cashier to withdraw INR 6 million (approximately $800,000 at the time) from the bank. The details of this high-profile case remain controversial and widely debated.

The investigation into the case was led by Hari Dev Kaushal, the Station House Officer of Delhi’s Chanakyapuri area. He passed away at the age of 91 leaving a lasting legacy in the police force. Kaushal was the father of Bollywood actors Rahul Dev and Mukul Dev, who penned Hansal Mehta’s 2017 film “Omerta.” Now, Mukul Dev has joined the writing team for this new project, collaborating with Suprotim Sengupta (Netflix’s “Murder Mubarak”) and Kunal Aneja (Netflix’s “Maamla Legal Hai”). The team has conducted extensive research using both primary and secondary sources.

Ellipsis Entertainment is currently in the process of casting the role of Hari Dev Kaushal, finalizing the director, and assembling an ensemble cast to portray the key figures involved in the case.

Founded in 2016 by veteran Indian film executive Tanuj Garg and photographer, talent agent, and producer Atul Kasbekar, Ellipsis’ portfolio also includes “Tumhari Sulu” (2017) and “Looop Lapeta” (2022).

Garg commented on the upcoming film, stating, “As an enthusiast of the espionage genre, I was drawn to this case, which remains enigmatic. Many individuals connected to the investigation, including the primary suspect, died within months of the incident. We’re eager to finalize our cast and begin production.”

Kasbekar said, “My early photographic work in 1990 involved Rahul and Mukul Dev, who are also personal friends. I had the opportunity to interact extensively with their father, Hari Dev Ji. It’s fitting that he’s the central figure in this compelling narrative.”
