Heath Ledger’s 2001 action-thriller “A Knight’s Tale” is being adapted into a musical, with its theatrical debut scheduled in Manchester, UK in 2025. The movie also featured Paul Bettany, and Rufus Sewell, alongside Heath Ledger, who pretends to be a nobleman and excels in jousting, but faces fierce competition from Count Adhemar, played by Sewell.

Originally written and directed by Brian Helgeland and produced by Columbia Pictures, the film is now set for the stage by Runaway Entertainment, known for “101 Dalmatians the Musical.” The musical adaptation will premiere on 11th April, 2025, for a limited engagement. Brona C Titley has adapted the story for the stage, with direction by Rachel Kavanaugh and choreography by Matt Cole. Casting director Lucy Casson and Keston and Keston, responsible for children’s casting, are involved, though the cast has yet to be revealed.

Helgeland mentioned he had previously tried to create a sequel centered on the teenage daughter of Ledger’s character, with interest from Sony and Netflix, but it didn’t come to fruition.

“Over twenty years ago I had the time of my life surrounded by a supreme cast and crew making a film we all fell in love with while we were joyfully making it,” said Helgeland adding that “Sitting at a recent read-through of the stage version, fashioned by Rachel Kavanaugh and Brona C Titley, I could feel that same joy and love emerging. I am grateful for the new life they are creating and very eager to see it in all its fully staged glory.”

The musical adaptation of “A Knight’s Tale” is produced by Tristan Baker and Charlie Parsons for Runaway Entertainment and Isobel David, in association with Sony Pictures and Brian Helgeland.

This musical joins a trend of films being adapted for the stage, with recent and upcoming projects including “13 Going on 30 The Musical” and “Burlesque the Musical.”
