Eurosport commentator Bob Ballard has issued an apology after he made a sexist remark about Australia’s female swimmers that led to his removal from the broadcaster’s Olympics coverage. Ballard made the comment during the Australian women’s 4x100m freestyle relay victory ceremony, which took place at the Paris Aquatic Centre.

In his statement posted on X, Ballard acknowledged the controversy, wrote, “The comments I made during the Australian freestyle relay victory ceremony on Saturday have caused some offence.” He added, that “It was never my intention to upset or belittle anyone and, if I did, I apologise. I am a massive advocate of women’s sport.”

Ballard’s remark, “Well, the women just finishing up. You know what women are like… hanging around, doing their make-up,” was widely criticized. Lizzie Simmonds, who was co-commentating with Ballard, labeled the comment as “outrageous” but has not elaborated further on the issue.

Eurosport responded to the issues, said, “During a segment of Eurosport’s coverage last night, commentator Bob Ballard made an inappropriate comment. To that end, he has been removed from our commentary roster with immediate effect.” The move comes as the Paris Olympics is being promoted as “The Equal Games,” with female athletes now representing 50% of the participants.
